Inaugural Kennard Scholar |
What type of career have you pursued and want to achieve in the future?
I am a professional school counselor. I earned my master鈥檚 degree from USM in 2018. I am working on becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor so that I can provide low-income students free counseling services.
How did receiving the Clyde Kennard scholarship impact you?
This scholarship impacted me in several different ways. I was able to network with other exceptional students at USM. We went on several trips for cultural exposure to new locations. The biggest impact was the mentorship I received from Dr. Johnell Goins, Dr. Eddie Holloway, and Dr. Rodney Bennett. The Kennard Scholars program also allowed me to present ideas and help grow this scholarship for other students at USM (including my younger sorority sisters).
My journey honors him because despite the many setbacks, pains and tribulations, I have continued to conquer my goals.
How do/did your academic pursuits or journey honor Kennard鈥檚 legacy?
Mr. Kennard was educated and cared about his family! He was determined to continue
his education and meet his goals. My journey honors him because despite the many setbacks,
pains and tribulations, I have continued to conquer my goals. Also, to honor him,
I am a firm believer in the 鈥渆ach one, teach one鈥 philosophy! I give back to my community
by helping tutor/mentor lower income students and/or school dropouts. My goal is to
teach as many students as possible about positive coping skills so that they can turn
away from negative coping skills (drugs, alcohol, etc.) Each day I work hard to continue
to honor Mr. Kennard by teaching the importance of setting goals, reaching them, and
improving the world around them.
