Advanced Mathematics = Beauty with Impact

Graduate study in mathematics and computational science deepens your understanding of proofs (the beauty) and your ability to model complex phenomena (the impact). A mathematician’s distinctive approach to problem solving paired with a scientist’s eye for appropriate models will make you a highly sought after individual in many employment sectors.

Up to 12 teaching assistantships with a full tuition waiver are available to Computational Science (Mathematics) Ph.D. students. The 9 month stipend level is $13,000.

Central Focus of Our Curricula

Most of our faculty’s work revolves around computational modeling.

  • We use numerical methods in Partial Differential Equations, Linear Algebra and Optimization to, for example, measure the efficacy of oil recovery, aid medicine and law enforcement through image enhancement, and improve nanoscale measurement by modeling light diffraction.
  • We use Computational Algebra to improve symbolic computation.
  • We use Computational Discrete Mathematics to explore the structure of graphs and ordered sets.

Faculty Highlight: Dr. James Lambers

Advisor to the first and only SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) student chapter in Mississippi. Since 2014, the chapter has provided students from across the mathematical sciences with an outlet for networking activities, including tailgate parties, fundraisers, sponsorship of seminars, career panels, and trips to SIAM conferences for presenting student research. Dr. Lambers’ research connects to image processing and oil recovery and many of his students are funded by external fellowships.
