The USM Saxophone Studio has a long tradition of excellence; beginning with the tenure
of Kenneth 鈥淏uddy鈥 Deans, developed by Dr. Lawrence Gwozdz, and continued now with
Dr. Dannel Espinoza. Saxophone students at USM represent some of the most talented
and driven students in the School of Music, seeking out leadership positions throughout
the university and degrees ranging from music performance and education to engineering
and political science. Home to the renowned Saxophone Chamber Orchestra (SCO), the
saxophone studio offers students with unmatched performance and educational opportunities
that are designed to build on each student's talents and abilities to help guide them
into their eventual careers in and out of music.
What Will I Learn?
Each member of the saxophone studio is encouraged to begin developing career and life
skills while they are students at the USM. Guided learning opportunities such as:
- Ensemble management
- Building a professional social media presence
- Arranging for large and small ensemble
- Audio and video production
- Instrument repair and maintenance
These topics and others allow students to gain the knowledge and confidence to move
into the professional world equipped with the skills for success.

A FUN DAY FOR REED INSTRUMENTS!
The oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon studios join forces for a fun filled day devoted to reed instruments. It will include informative sessions, performances, vendors, and a final ensemble concert for all attendees.
Performance Opportunities
Performance opportunities for saxophone students include positions in the University bands and symphony orchestra, jazz ensembles, smaller ensembles鈥攊ncluding but not limited to saxophone quartet and the Saxophone Chamber Orchestra (SCO). Membership to all ensembles is determined by audition at the start of each semester.
