Kat Adcox is president of 91ÉÙÅ®¼¯ÖÐÓª (USM) Kappa Sigma Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. The Poplarville, Miss. native is a junior media entertainment arts major with a minor in social media strategy and marketing and currently holds the title of Miss University of Southern Mississippi. Adcox has held this title twice and was recently named a Quality of Life Finalist at the Miss Mississippi Competition. Sherecently spoke with Southern Miss Now about her work as president of the chapter, her sorority’s philanthropy and community service, and why a USM student should consider becoming involved in Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) at Southern Miss.
Duties as chapter president: I have many duties as president, but my favorite is getting to oversee the work of my executive members in every aspect of our chapter, from socials to financials. I get to empower them to run their events and programs and help them become the best they can be in their roles.
Alpha Chi Omega Philanthropy and Service: Our philanthropy is Domestic Violence Awareness. We volunteer at our local domestic abuse family shelter twice a week every week, and in conjunction with that effort, we hold many fundraising events such as ‘French Fries with Alpha Chi’s’ and ‘The Red Carnation Gala’. We also hold many drives for clothing, blankets, and hygiene products to support the shelters. These events help us not only raise money for survivors of domestic violence but awareness of the problem, as one in three women are affected. We are working tirelessly to bring awareness to this issue and make a change.
*Benefits of Fraternity and Sorority Life at USM: My sorority has completely changed my life. Coming into college I was not initially interested, but I am so glad I gave it a chance. This experience has helped me grow so much as a person. The support my sorority sisters have shown is what has pushed me to want to compete for Miss USM and to run for president of my chapter. If it were not for the love and support I’ve received from the women around me, I would not have had these experiences. They want me succeed, and I will never settle for anything less in friendships than what I’ve had here with them. FSL life has truly blessed me.
