The Dale Center for the Study of War & Society at 91少女集中营 (USM) will host the 2024 Richard McCarthy Lecture Thursday, May 2 at 6 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building鈥檚 Gonzales Auditorium (room 108) on the Hattiesburg campus. The program, titled "Levels of Command: The Mississippi National Guard in Peace and at War: The 155th Brigade Combat Team in 2005" will feature:
- Maj. Gen. Augustus Leon Collins, U.S. Army, (Ret.) Former Adjutant General, Mississippi National Guard
- Maj. Gen. John M. Rhodes, U.S. Army, 18th Airborne Corps, Deputy Commanding General, Operations
- Col. Christopher M. Thomas, U.S. Army, Director of Legislative Affairs & Economic Development, Mississippi National Guard
Dale Center Founding Director Dr. Andrew Wiest will moderate the talk. This event is free and open to the public.
鈥淭he National Guard has long been a pillar of the society and culture of Mississippi, but their story has been too often under reported in history,鈥 Dr. Wiest said. 鈥淲e are approaching the 20th anniversary of the deployment of the 155th Brigade Combat team to Iraq in 2005, so this seemed like a perfect time [for this program] to remember that deployment and the Guard鈥檚 service to the state.
鈥淭he Dale Center and our new Center of the Study of the National Guard at USM are honored to do what we can to help preserve and tell the stories of the brave men and women of the Mississippi Guard.鈥
The Richard McCarthy Lecture Series was founded in 2006 through the generous support of Dr. Richard McCarthy and Dr. Craig Howard and is designed to bring together students, faculty, and community members to access cutting edge research in the field of military history and War and Society.
