About the Program

B.S. degree program in Polymer Science & Engineering

Mission

The mission of the BS program in Polymer Science and Engineering is to provide students with necessary preparation to excel in the profession as highly competent polymer engineers or to pursue advanced degrees.

Vision

The vision of the polymer science & engineering program is to be recognized as a regional, national, and international leader in the development of polymer scientists & engineers by industry, government, and academia.

The School鈥檚 undergraduate polymer science and engineering program prepares students to achieve the following educational objectives within 3-5 years of graduation:

Objective 1

Advance professionally with increasing leadership and responsibility beyond entry level in polymer industries or related fields.

Objective 2

Build capability to work effectively in multidisciplinary team settings to achieve organization objectives.

Objective 3

Contribute to societal benefits in an environmentally and ethically responsible manner.

Objective 4

Engage in life-long learning through professional activities and training, the pursuit of advanced degrees, and individual professional development.

The Bachelors of Science degree program in Polymer Science & Engineering meets the requirements set forth by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. Each student completing the degree will demonstrate mastery of the following competencies as established by ABET:

(1) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.

(2) an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.

(3) an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.

(4) an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.

(5) an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.

(6) an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.

(7) an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
